How to find right definition and purpose of a specific CI attribute

Hello All,

I would like to know what is the correct definition and purpose of a specific attribute within an respective table.

For example -

1. In Virtual Machine Instance (Class) cmdb_ci_vm_instance (Table)

Install Status (install_status) and Operational status (operational_status) is derived from parent classes then what is the point of having State (State) as added attribute ??

Please help me understand what is the though process that has been put by ServiceNow before defining attributes and is there a dictionary that have definitions ???
