Start with Model categories, then get an understanding how this works to link together asset, ci, pid and sold products. and what categories should be an asset, if you f.ex. import ci's decide whether to set ci - verification.
When you then go to models start with hardware models - link to categories, then software models link to categories, consider other models like bundled etc. you need have the governance model place, how to create, modify models, expecially around life cycle of models.
If you have the licenses on HAM/SAM the models can be normalized through the ServiceNow content services, which can help you get the right models in your platform.
Hope this helps to get you started, in nowcreate - there is a deck - CSDM and Product Models, that give you some insight of how the models are used in the system.
good luck

Thank you! So if the CMDB is messy and I have never done any of this before, what is the "easiest" way to even begin?
