We have a custom kb viewing page in our csm portal. This page uses the out of box "Knowledge Article Content" widget to render the article. Articles which have pasted images as opposed to attachment images, users with the snc_external role cannot view the images.
If I or anyone with the snc_internal role view the article on the same page, the images render fine. It has to be permissions related but I am unsure of how.
