We got the ux framework user criteria plugin enabled on our instance, I have created a workspace with variants and i would like to direct the variant using groups rather than roles however I could not see where the audiences can target Group, User, Department, or Location as stated in the doc. You have to request the plugin from ServiceNow support directly

I didn't have time to test, but you could try adding 'user criteria inclusions' and 'user criteria exclusions' to the form. It might be that you can use the 'old' user criteria that way, but as said: this is untested by me.

Not sure if you are still seeking an answer, but including some more info for anyone who comes across this.
The UX Framework User Criteria [com.glide.ux.user_criteria] plugin is installed with some of the Service Operations Workspace plugins (ex: Service Operations Workspace for ITSM).
Once installed, you will need to make sure that the system property (glide.ux.user_criteria_enabled on the sys_properties table) is set to 'true'.
The user criteria options are then added to the audiences record as two related lists (see image below). Here is where you will add any user criteria that you have defined elsewhere.
