Technical FAQs

What are the usage limits?

For Personal Developer Instances (PDI), there is a limit of 10 prompts per instance per month. For customer instances that acquire Build Agent from the ServiceNow Store, there is a limit of 25 prompts per instance per month. For instances that are licensed for Now Assist for Creator, limits are based on your license.

When are usage limits reset?

PDI usage limits for Build Agent prompts reset every 30 days starting from the day on which the limit is set.

What if I run out of usage or used all my prompts before this challenge?

The limit is per instance, so you can elect to release your current PDI and request a new one, which will reset the usage count. Remember to back up any important work on your instance before you release it.

How long can each prompt be?

Very long. Feel free to be as simple or verbose as you want in each prompt. You can copy and paste large console logs, lengthy Product Requirement Documentation, or even huge error messages.

What else does Build Agent handle besides writing the code?

  • Compiling and validating source files
  • Testing of its own files
  • Pushing builds into the instance

How does Build Agent differ from AI Agents or Agentic AI?

While both names share “Agent,” Build Agent focuses on dev automation, whereas AI Agent (Agentic AI) focuses on task automation within workflows. Build Agent is an AI Agent.

What are the limitations of Build Agent?

Generally speaking, Build Agent is currently limited to the following abilities:

  • ServiceNow Fluent via the ServiceNow SDK
  • React based web components for user interfaces

To see what ServiceNow metadata that Build Agent is able to create and edit on your behalf (like business rules, client scripts, tables, etc.), check out the documentation for Fluent here:

https://www.servicenow.com/docs/bundle/zurich-application-development/page/build/servicenow-sdk/conc...

That means Build Agent’s scope is currently explicit. If it is not part of the Fluent SDK, then it cannot build it. But that also means that the capabilities of Build Agent are constantly growing as more and more metadata types are being added to the Fluent framework.

What that will look like as you build your applications: Build Agent will elect to write scripted code instead of building a Flow Designer action or flow. Or another example: telling Build Agent to build something that it doesn’t have access to and forcing it to move forward despite this might cause it to build it a different way or simulate that it built it.

Always remember that Build Agent is utilizing generative AI and can hallucinate.

Where can I learn more about Build Agent and how to acquire it for my company?

Read more about the product of Build Agent and Enterprise Vibe Coding at https://www.servicenow.com/products/vibe-coding.html#faq, including questions regarding governance and how Build Agent relates to App Engine.

Since #ServiceNow made the #BuildAgent Trail Version available for everyone, I’ve seen many examples from the #ServiceNowCommunity. Especially after the #BuildWithBuildAgent Challenge started.

Most examples so far focused on the UI, like games, dashboards, or task management apps with visualizations.

I wanted to test something different: can Build Agent also help with backend, more technical use cases?

So, I joined the challenge and built an application that integrates with HeyGen to create avatar videos.

The application consists of four main parts:

  • A 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞 that uses the HeyGen REST API to create avatar videos
  • A 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 to log requests and receive callback data once a video is generated
  • A 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐏𝐈 to handle the callback
  • A 𝐔𝐈 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞 with a gallery and a textbox to generate new videos

Did I get it working? 𝐘𝐞𝐬.
Did it work the first time? 𝐍𝐨.

I tried different approaches.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝟏

I wanted to see whether it is possible with one single prompt.

Spoiler alert: No, it wasn’t.

I don’t know who to blame. Maybe it was my description, maybe it was Build Agent, but I couldn’t get the app right in a single prompt, nor fix it with the remaining nine.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝟐

In my second attempt I broke it down. One prompt for each component.

The start looked promising, but when connecting the backend to the UI page, Build Agent wanted to use the scripted REST API to generate new videos. For some reason I could not convince it to use the Script Include with the remaining prompts. This could also be my fault. Telling an AI to create something is a completely different skill than doing it by yourself.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝟑

This time it worked.

𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑡 1: Created the request table and the Script Include to generate a video.

𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑡 2:  Created the Scripted REST API to receive data when generation was complete.

𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑡 3: Fixed a mistake in the payload description I did with prompt 2.

𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑡 4: Built the UI with the gallery and textbox.

𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑡 5: Connected the “Generate Video” button to the backend logic.

𝐖̲𝐡̲𝐚̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐈̲ ̲𝐥̲𝐞̲𝐚̲𝐫̲𝐧̲𝐞̲𝐝̲

It’s impressive how much Build Agent can already do. But using it doesn’t mean you can skip understanding how things work.

For the best results I need to think through the solution design, break it down into individual components, and then use Build Agent selectively to support specific parts.

Make sure you have a solid governance process. It should be clear that a solid governance process is essential, even if you’re not using technologies like Build Agent.

But The speed and volume of code Build Agent can produce make good governance even more critical.

𝐖̲𝐡̲𝐚̲𝐭̲’̲𝐬̲ ̲𝐧̲𝐞̲𝐱̲𝐭̲?̲

I was able to use Build Agent to create a version of that application. But so far there was no time for a code review. This step is essential to really judge the quality of Build Agent.

I have just completed the BuildWithBuildAgent challenge from ServiceNow!

I used Build Agent to create an application called “Universal Expense Splitter” designed to help groups easily track and split expenses for trips, team lunches, sports/club activities, and gift contributions.

🛠 What I built:
• A complete data model with Events, Members (including mobile number & WhatsApp availability), Expenses, and Split Calculations.
• A UI Action that automatically recalculates who owes what.
• Support for multiple event types like Vacation, Team Lunch, Sports/Club, and Gift Contribution.

I’m proud of how quickly Build Agent helped me go from idea to a fully working application.
If you're exploring low-code or AI-assisted development on ServiceNow, this challenge is a great way to jump in!

🧭 The Meal planner need

I have been meaning to develop this kind of tool for my daily life for a while, but never found the time to pursue it. A single place to manage recipes for my family, while eating well, diversified meals, and automatically generating the grocery list.

🧠 My Prompt

Create a meal planner app. The app relies on a recipe index, a food inventory with purchase and expiration dates, and a family table, allowing members to mark their favourite recipes. The recipe suggestion should limit food waste, not repeating more than 3 times per week the recipe type and generating a grocery list for missing ingredients. User experience as a portal, with a theme that encompasses W3C accessibility standards.

📱The App developed

📊 Complete Database Structure

  • 6 interconnected tables: Recipes, Food Inventory, Family Members, Meal Plans, Recipe Favorites, and Grocery Lists
  • Smart relationships with proper foreign keys and choice lists
  • Comprehensive fields including expiry dates, costs, dietary restrictions, and more

🧠 Intelligent Business Logic

  • Recipe suggestion engine that limits food waste and prevents over-repetition (max 3x per week per recipe type)
  • Automatic grocery list generation triggered when meal plans are created or updated
  • Food waste tracking with expiry date monitoring and cost analysis

🎨 Accessible Green-Themed Portal

The main portal interface includes 4 comprehensive tabs:

  1. 📅 Meal Planning - Weekly grid view for planning family meals
  2. 📚 Recipe Index - Browse, add, edit, and favorite recipes with advanced filtering
  3. 🥫 Pantry List - Complete inventory management with expiration alerts
  4. 📊 Analytics - Food waste trends, cost analysis, and family favorites tracking

W3C Accessibility Standards

  • ARIA labels and roles throughout the interface
  • Keyboard navigation support for all interactive elements
  • High contrast green theme with proper color ratios
  • Screen reader compatibility with semantic HTML structure

🌱 Sustainability Features

  • Food waste reduction through smart expiry date tracking
  • Recipe diversity algorithms to prevent meal fatigue
  • Cost optimization with inventory value tracking
  • Smart shopping lists to minimize over-purchasing

🚀 Getting Started

  1. Add Family Members: Start by adding your family members with their dietary preferences
  2. Build Recipe Index: Add your favorite family recipes with ingredients and instructions
  3. Stock Your Pantry: Add current food inventory with purchase and expiry dates
  4. Plan Your Week: Use the meal planning grid to assign recipes to specific days
  5. Track Analytics: Monitor food waste, costs, and family favorites over time

Your Family Planner is ready to help your family eat better, waste less, and plan smarter! 🏠

The #BuildWithBuildAgent Challenge experience

The power of Build Agent in the ServiceNow IDE is been pretty impressive. With just a few lines of prompt, I created a fully functional custom app in minutes. It’s fast, intuitive, and a total game-changer for app developers and process designers. Can’t wait to build more! Next step will be to add local groceries food discounts & coupons and a budget constraint!

As part of the #BuildWithBuildAgent challenge, I used ServiceNow's build agent to create a scoped application called CMDB Manager, entirely from natural language prompt.

APP Concept :
-A dashboard that would give more information to Manage CI/Asset and Discovery related information for config management.

-Easier way to fetch a excel report or report summary in a word document or deliver

minor resolutions through conversational prompt
-Predictive analysis forecast to predict asset failure and things that can be taken to fix them
-AI insights based on the various dashboard tabs.

- Options to get excel report of data in each metric or get a AI summary of the information in the selected tab

Hi Everyone ,

Ever had a single credential rotation turn into a full-blown outage because 300+ Discovery schedules suddenly failed at 2 AM?

That’s exactly what CredSafe Rotator stops — forever.

CredSafe Rotator – Credential Rotation Readiness Dashboard

Real-world enterprise use case:
Your security team mandates quarterly password rotation for all Discovery credentials.
Before CredSafe: You rotate → everything breaks → war-room → angry app owners.
After CredSafe: One dashboard tells you exactly what will break, calculates the risk, and generates a bullet-proof rotation playbook in one click.

Key Functionalities:

• Real-time risk score (1–100) for every stored credential (SSH, Windows, SNMP, JDBC, etc.)
• Instantly shows how many Discovery schedules, patterns, and cloud accounts will break if rotated
• Heatmap table with last successful use, last password change, and impact count
• Overall Readiness Score gauge with color-coded health
• One-click “Generate Safe Playbook” that automatically:
→ Creates a Standard Change Request
→ Pauses every affected Discovery schedule 15 min before rotation
→ Resumes them 30 min after
→ Generates and attaches a complete PDF playbook (rollback steps included)
→ Sends Email + Teams alerts to itom_admin role
→ Adds “rotation_scheduled” tag to the credential
→ Logs everything in Rotation History audit trail
• Full dark-mode support, responsive Zurich Polaris design
• Export dashboard to CSV/PDF in one click
• Confetti celebration when overall readiness >90

No more credential rotation disasters. Pure ITOM magic.

#BuildWithBuildAgent

As part of the #BuildWithBuildAgent challenge, I built a complete Job Portal Application using ServiceNow Build Agent — all with simple natural-language prompts!

Here’s my full experience 👇

Step 1: Define the App Concept

My goal was to build a Job Portal application that allows users to easily post, manage, and apply for jobs.
Key features I envisioned:

-A form for posting job openings
-Candidate application submission
- Resume & profile management
-Admin controls and custom roles
-A clean, modern UI and Service Portal pages

Step 2: Prompt Used for Build Agent

Here’s the prompt I used:

Create a Job Portal Service Portal setup with the following: 1. A table called Job Posting (fields: title, description, location, skills_required, status, publish_to_portal). 2. A table called Job Application (fields: full_name, email, phone, resume attachment, job_posting reference). 3. One Service Portal with: - A Job List page that shows all Job Posting records where status = Open and publish_to_portal = true. - A Job Details page showing the job details and an "Apply Now" button. - An Apply page that uses a Record Producer. 4. Record Producer: - Fields: full_name, email, phone, resume (attachment), job_posting (hidden). - Creates a record in the Job Application table. - Autofill job_posting using a URL parameter. Generate all widgets, pages, routing, and form layouts.

And some additional prompts to make it work

Step 3: Explore the Application

The Job Portal application included the following sections:

📊 Dashboard
📄 Job Postings
👤 Applications
🌐 Service Portal View

Step 4: Data Model

Build Agent created the main tables:

1️⃣ Job Postings – Stores job title, description, skills, experience, salary, location, status
2️⃣ Candidate Applications – Stores applicant details, resume link, job reference, status
3️⃣ User Profiles – For reusable applicant information

While a few manual steps are still needed to make the application fully functional, the power and potential of ServiceNow AI are remarkable and definitely worth exploring

Final Thoughts

Building the Job Portal Application with Build Agent was an amazing experience.
It’s incredible how simple prompts can generate a fully functional ServiceNow application in just 10–15 minutes — complete with logic, UI, and data.

I hope this inspires others to try Build Agent and experience how effortlessly we can build meaningful applications! 🚀
