Best Practice on swapping User Ids?

Is there a best practice, documentation or experience for the use case where you change the User IDs to a New User ID format?

We are testing and investigating this now, the swapping in sys_user.user_name is for us as senior ServiceNow engineers not a big issue, must be done before the LDAP import do 😉
We use a gradual approach first some small groups and later the remaining company users.

Just want to know what experience/information is available on this to check if we miss anything.
