Hello,
I'm new to ServiceNow and thinking of using the free PDI to build an application and present it during an examination day in a few months time.
My idea is to accelerate the business processes of a small management business.
I have seen a ServiceNow developer present a similar application project which answered the business needs of large real estate owners, and that motivated me to give it a try. It also made me even more aware of the possibilities with ServiceNow.
However, as I'm not yet experienced in the development side on the Platform, I've got a few questions:
Can one begin building a frontend with the Service Portal then build the backend afterwards?
Or should one focus on the backend first and then build the frontend last?
What are the SN tools to design the user interfaces (besides the Service Portal)?
Will the free PDI be enough to build and present a live demo of the application?
I completed the ServiceNow Fundamentals course (preparing for the CSA exam) but no SN development course yet, and I have no experience working on the ServiceNow Platform.
If anyone can advise on how to go about this idea, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello,
I'd recommend researching and consider using App Engine Studio (AES): https://www.servicenow.com/products/app-engine-studio.html - you should probably think through what you want to build first...then work in AES and then go from there. Your app wouldn't need an entire portal dedicated to it. Watch some examples of people making content with AES and all that to learn more.

Hi,
If you're focused on CSA at this time, I wouldn't recommend going too deep into application development, right now. It's definitely worthwhile after you've passed the CSA exam.
For CSA, it's recommended to:
- Take the Welcome to ServiceNow Now Learning Course (free): https://nowlearning.servicenow.com/lxp?id=learning_course_prev&course_id=023708df1bc0119cf95e99b8bd4...
- Take the ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals (SNAF) (paid - onDemand or Instructor Led): https://nowlearning.servicenow.com/lxp?id=search&q=servicenow%20administration%20fundamentals
- Refer to the CSA Blueprint: https://www.servicenow.com/content/dam/servicenow/other-documents/training/servicenow-sys-admin-exam...
I wouldn't recommend going to any third party site, such as Udemy, just based on past experiences where the content may not be covering what's on the exam and some of the test quizzes contain incorrect answers. Additionally, they aren't official ServiceNow resources so browse with caution.
Best of luck on the CSA exam!

Hi,
No, the Fundamentals course got rebranded into SNAF, so definitely don't take that, haha.
I'd refer to the course contents from the one you took and the other resource(s) mentioned above and consider focusing on taking that exam before moving to app dev. It's definitely awesome though that you're ready to jump in!

Hello Allen,
Thanks for the wise recommendation.
I took the ServiceNow Fundamentals course on the San Diego version and base my studies on both San Diego and Tokyo exams blueprints.
Do the SNAF course contents differ by a lot from the previous ServiceNow Fundamentals to justify taking the SNAF too?
Thank you!

Hi,
Thanks again for the information on the Fundamentals vs SNAF, as well as your advice on taking the exam before moving on. I plan on taking it in the next two months and actually thought that developing in my PDI would get me some of the required "experience" on the blueprint 🙂.
I'm indeed eager to get into the app development side and get creative as I've got in mind a few processes from past experiences that could make a good dev project on SN.
