Building an application or Customization?

Hi all, I'm wanting to build a customization that I can sell to enterprise customers, that they can "deploy/add on" to their existing ServiceNow instance. Effectively, this customization will contain:

  • Defined Dashboards
  • Defined Forms
  • Defined Workflows
  • Defined custom code that integrate into my SaaS application.

I'm trying to determine the right path/terminology as I'm learning the ServiceNow platform, and I don't want to go down the wrong path. What is the correct terminology for what I am wanting to build? An application? Plugin?

I appreciate any help and direction. I'm very technical, but have not done much ServiceNow development.

@amazonbees In ServiceNow, you can build your own custom scoped application using Studio (Traditional IDE in ServiceNow) or App Engine Studio (low code/no code) application development tool. Each custom application can have their own Dashboards, form, workflows/flows, business rules and script includes.

Only ServiceNow can develop and distribute plugins, however, developers can choose to build their own custom scoped applications and distribute/monetize it using ServiceNow store.

For more information on building custom application please refer to URLs https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/tokyo-application-development/page/build/applications/concept/c_C...

Hope this helps.

Hi amazonbees,

You can achieve this with the help of custom scoped application which is one of the best approach. For better approach you can always visit (https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en) and take up Certified Application Developer on Demand course.

Hi @amazonbees ,

Just a piece of advice. It could be that you should focus on learning the ServiceNow platform and not to much "a customization that I can sell to enterprise customers". There are many developers on the ServiceNow ecosystem, so you need to have an extraordinary good product to be able to sell it.

I instead would advise you to learn the platform, and work with a company where you can utilize and enhance your skills to be really great at the platform.
