Is it possible to have a button (see below) in the employee center mega menu?

Yes, it is possible. Though the button will be next to the taxonomy parent topics.
Go to: https://instance-name.service-now.com/sp_rectangle_menu_item_list.do
Create a New record with the your prefered input as I have in my example (left side image).
Once you've created it a button will show in the mega menu, as shown in (right side image).
When you click on the button on mega menu you will be directed to the item. In my example, I used a OOTB record producer.
