Can I set the Messaging Channel by a reference field in a notification?

I set up a notification for groups to each be able to select their group on a reference field on asmt_metric_type so they can select their group email. So each group if they want to be notified can fill in their group name and if it isn't blank, their group will be emailed. Some groups would also like to receive their notifications on a messaging channel (or maybe both, up to them). However while setting a notification to select the group the chose was easy, I'm not seeing a way do do the same sort of thing with Messaging Channels. Just picking a specific messaging channel.
Just curious if I am overlooking something, or if there isn't an easy way to accomplish this?

The channels are user specific. Users can set preferences to receive or not receive them. These aren't on group level. The logic is that an individual receives a notification, so you set the channel and that's it. If it's sms: an sms will be send to one user (that could be part of the group), but not to a group.

Regardless of how many people it sends to though I would like the notification to select it based on a reference field. So rather than creating 20 notifications for each possible survey in this case, as they ask to be notified. I would just have the notification only send if they have someone in a reference field and send to that person. If they want a message they can select the person, or remove a person if they get sick of it.

What are you trying to do? You asked about messaging channels and now you are talking about adding/removing people from notifications? This doesn't make any sense.
