Display categories in dropdown instead of nested list on SC Categories widget

Hello,

I want to display categories as a dropdown (with no subcategories) instead of them appearing in a panel view like they appear now. 

So now, instead of selecting category from the side panel (which will be removed), user should have a category dropdown where they can select a particular category in that catalog, and the category items cards will get updated based on the selection. Something like this:

I'm stuck on this for weeks now and I am not able to find any article on this change. Can anyone please help or give suggestions?

Have you checked https://developer.servicenow.com/connect.do#!/share?

If there is none there, I would try and clone an existing widget that works similarly like the KB Knowledge Bases (kb-knowledge-bases) widget and modify it.

I checked the community and couldn't find anything similar like that. I would really appreciate if you can help with this clone of KB Knowledge Base widget that has a dropdown of catalog categories instead of Knowledge Bases.
