Displaying of Chinese Characters

Chinese characters are displaying as question marks in the body of the received e-mail message. Is there a way to escape the Chinese characters in the original e-mail before it is sent? These are e-mail notification contained within the worlflow.

This is probably for one of 2 reasons. In order of liklihood:
1. The Chinese font is not installed on the computer you're viewing the message
2. The encoding of the message is wrong (i.e. should be Unicode, I believe)
