Does cloning over a newer version with an older version instance break things?

We are in the process of upgrading to London and have a question on cloning. We have a DEV instance upgraded to London currently; we will be cloning over that instance from PROD, which is on Istanbul. If we clone over London with an Istanbul instance will our data preservers be lost? Also, what other impacts may this have on the cloned over DEV instance?

As far as I know your Dev instance will be wiped and replaced completely.

First Request should be of Clone then it should be upgrade!! However you can still go back to older-version by calling your Service Now Support. They have the incremental back-ups of your older version.
View this also (as in your case this will be helpful): System Clone
2) Post this you should fix the issues (for any customization's done).
3) Export all your update sets for fixes from Dev.
4) Upload them to sub-production and production instances once they are upgraded.
Follow the Upgrade Planning Checklist: Upgrade Planning Check-List
Mark this correct/helpful if this works for you
Cheers!!

Your target instance will be completely replaced with the clone. There will be nothing left of the instance before the clone. You can clone any version to any version forward or backward. If you have data in your London instance you want to keep, you need to save it out of the instance before cloning.

Hi twooton,
However this will be partially-useful in this case as the update sets will also include the breaks (in the current code) and enhancements of London.
If the cloning is now done from Production to Dev--> The only data lost in DEV would be the "Developments done from last Clone and not moved to Production still".
Cheers!!
