Get value of related list shown on form

Hi,

Im a newbie to servicenow. I want to get the value of a related list shown on the change form and depending on the value i want a message to appear on the form.

How should I approach this? any suggestion or ideas?

Would a Client script that calls up a script include be ideal?

There is no   need to call the script include from the client script.
