How long should it take, on average, for upgrading Helsinki to Jakarta?

Hi,

I recently upgraded an instance from Helsinki to Jakarta. It took around 6.5 hours to do so.

Has anyone tried upgrading yet and how long did it take? I remember hearing the upgrade time would be around 30 minutes, hence why I'm curious why my instance took 6.5 hours.

Thanks.

Hi Derek,

The time it takes varies. Some of the variance is how many releases you are jumping. You did two so there are more changes than if you went Istanbul to Jakarta. More plugins, more database updates, etc.

Another variable is how many records you have one your system. If you have millions of tasks, for example, and the task schema needs updating, that will take a while.

During the upgrade if you try to login with admin credentials, you'll be brought to the update status screen and you can tell exactly what the system is working on. This has been around since Geneva or Helsinki if I recall. I remember watching my instance get upgraded to Istanbul and Jakarta in the past year.

Hope that helps.

Hi Derek,

Have you upgraded PROD or other sub-production instances ?

We have upgraded our DEV instance and it took around 2 hours and 30 mins to complete the upgrade.

Thanks.

Hello Derek,

I cannot tell you the exact time which an upgrade from a previous version to the latest release: Jakarta should consume.
Yet, from personal experience, I may say that my DEV instance which was running on Helsinki release was successfully upgraded to Jakarta for a period of around 5 hours. Most of my colleagues' DEV instances that were running on Istanbul release were upgraded to Jakarta also for 4 - 5 hours.
Thus, I may say that the 6.5 hours consumed for your upgrade was something expected, judging on the results I saw.

Maybe the customization(s) you had on it along with any applications and etc. also played part in the upgrade process and thus it took more than 4 - 5 hours.

Every upgrade will be different depending on the plugins that you have activated, number of records in tables that are impacted and other factors. Have you checked the Upgrade Summary Report? 90% of upgrade times is almost always taken by schema changes on the database. The Upgrade Summary Report has a breakdown of the time taken by the 10 slowest schema changes. There is also a spot that lists the slowest fix scripts. Where does it say your time was spent?
