How to add file in catalog item variable

Hello 

I have requirement, when user click on the catalog item variable it should download the one file(excel sheet).
Please suggest me, how can I do it.

Thank you for the suggestion, in that link mentioned to use variable type custom but I cant see custom type variable. Does it work if i use variable type macro ?
