How to configure portal background image to only display in the row

I am trying to configure the portal background image so that it only displays at the row level and does not cover the white spaces on the sides. I have tried custom CSS but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the response, however neither of these links contain information pertaining to my problem. I'm trying to crop the background image on both the left and right hand sides so that it will align with all the other widgets on the page.
