How to have multiple CIs with a sigle Asset?

I'm currently implementing an ITAM project for a client who already has discovery in place but does not actively manage assets. As part of the implementation, they’ve requested a feature that I’m not sure how to approach.

They want to support multiple CIs associated with the same physical asset over time, specifically:

• One operational CI representing the current role of the device.

• One or more retired CIs preserved as historical records.

• A clear relationship between the current CI and previous retired CIs for traceability.

For example, a computer is used as a workstation for one year. After it’s retired from that role, it is repurposed and used as a server. They want the same asset to be linked to a new active CI (server) while keeping the old workstation CI as retired for historical reference.

How do you advise implementing this functionality?
