CMDB - Identification and Reconciliation

This presentation focuses on the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) and its role in maintaining the Configuration Management Database (CMDB). It outlines the processes involved in identifying, reconciling, and managing configuration items (CIs) to ensure data integrity and prevent duplication. The presentation also highlights the benefits of using the IRE, such as improved data accuracy, reduced risk, and enhanced user experience.

This asset is intended for IT professionals and administrators responsible for managing and maintaining the CMDB. It is to be used as a guide for understanding and implementing the IRE processes to ensure accurate and reliable data within the CMDB. Users benefit from having this asset as it provides a comprehensive overview of the IRE framework, best practices for data management, and practical steps for preventing data duplication and ensuring data integrity.

Key Points:

  • Overview of the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE)
  • Use cases for populating the CMDB
  • IRE support for non-CMDB tables
  • Data source and IRE engine process flow
  • Discovery and IRE engine process flow
  • Benefits of using the IRE: improved experience, healthy data, reduced risk
  • CMDB 360 and IRE engine functionalities
  • Components of the IRE engine: identification, deduplication, reclassification, reconciliation
  • Identification and reconciliation rules
  • Dynamic and static reconciliation rules
  • CMDB 360 and CMDB workspace features
  • Duplicate CI remediation and de-duplication dashboard
  • Creating and using de-duplication templates
  • ServiceNow resources for further learning and support

hi @MS12345  ,

For Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE), I'd recommend starting with the official ServiceNow documentation, as it covers the architecture, identification rules, reconciliation rules, data source precedence, and implementation best practices.

Some key IRE best practices are:

  • Use unique identifiers (such as Serial Number, Correlation ID, or other stable identifiers) in Identification Rules to avoid duplicate CIs.

  • Define clear Reconciliation Rules to control which data source is allowed to update specific CI attributes.

  • Assign appropriate Data Source precedence so trusted sources (e.g., Discovery or Service Graph Connectors) don't get overwritten by less reliable sources.

  • Avoid direct GlideRecord updates to CMDB tables. Instead, use the CMDB Identification and Reconciliation API (IRE API) to ensure data integrity.

  • Regularly review the Identification Simulation and IRE logs to troubleshoot duplicate or skipped CI updates.

  • Test Identification and Reconciliation Rules thoroughly in a non-production environment before deploying to production.

Useful official resources:

  • ServiceNow Product Documentation – Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE)

  • ServiceNow CMDB Implementation Best Practices

  • Now Learning – CMDB Fundamentals and CMDB Implementation courses
