Issue: Script editor becomes read only after upgrade

Hi Everyone,

I am facing an issue with a Catalog Client Script in ServiceNow. After the Australia upgrade, the script editor has become read-only, and I am no longer able to edit the script.

Has anyone knows why this is happening? Any guidance on the root cause or steps to resolve it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi @zee15

If your platform is ServiceNow (upgraded to the Zurich release or later), the script editor becomes read-only due to the new Scripting Governance security model. Even system administrators lose edit access to script fields unless explicitly assigned the snc_required_script_writer_permission role via the Conditional Script Writer group

How to Fix Read-Only Script Editors in ServiceNow

  • Add the missing role: Assign your user account or your admin role the snc_required_script_writer_permission role. [1, 2]
  • Use the Conditional Group: Add your user profile directly to the Conditional Script Writer group, which safely provisions the required permission. [1, 2]
  • Admin role fix: If the core admin account is locked out, log in with security_admin privileges, open sys_user_role.LIST, navigate to the admin role record, and add snc_required_script_writer_permission under the "Contains roles" related list. [1, 2, 3]

Hi @zee15 ,
After the Zurich upgrade, having the admin role alone is no longer sufficient to write scripts. Users must also have the conditional_script_writer role.
Refer this article for more info:https://www.servicenow.com/community/servicenow-ai-platform-articles/why-your-admins-can-t-script-po...

If my response helped, mark it as helpful and accept the solution.
Thanks,
Dinesh

Hi @zee15

Ask your administrator to assign you the snc_required_script_writer_permission role.

You must log out and log back in for this change to take effect.
