Location and Building alternative name options?

I'm looking for a way to use a set of alternative building and location names in addition to the CMN_Location name field, in self service portal forms to help end users find the location they are looking for.

My organization has over 1000 locations  many of which are known by a number of different names by the people who work in them, and also by the various backend corporate systems due to lack of consistent validated inputs and manual data entry  - e.g. HR system, AD, Finance System. 

For example our head office is known as any of the following but is the same building - Head office Ireland, Head offices Ireland, IE Head Office, Headoffice, Dublin, Dublin office, HO Dublin, xyz street, New Office Dublin, Main office Dublin, and variations of the "name" of the building like Joe Bloggs House, JBH, J.B.H, etc. etc.   even before you factor in adding full stops and miss typed variations of the above.

While Data Normalisation helps in some of the tables, it does not stop people typing any of the above when looking for a location to select in some forms on the portal.

I cannot see that the Cmn_location table has a meta field, keyword or alternative name field anywhere - has anyone solved this using an out of the box feature or is customization the only way forward?
