If i understand it correctly, you want to remove the search from ESS portal. For that from Content Management -> Pages, open your home page. Under related links click on edit page.. This will open the Page in UI view. Just hover over the search box and click the delete icon on right corner.

Well... here is where mine is..
First, choose "Sites"
Now, you'll have a bunch of "Pages" that you can choose from. For my personal ESS page, It's named "NavMenu_Carousel". Your's will be different. Find it, then click it.
Once there, under Related Links, click Edit Page
Look for where the "Search" field is, then click the little pencil "Edit" icon on the top right.
Unckeck the "Search" checkbox.

"Portal Header" could be for a page not associated with ESS. Just make sure you click whatever header you're using for your ESS page.
