Stop notifications for specific Incidents

Before I go ahead an engineer a solution myself does anyone know if there is an out-of-the-box way of stopping user notifications selectively for specific Incidents?

There is an incident.notify field with 3 choices; Send Email, Telephone, Do not notify but it doesn't appear to do anything.

If you have a criteria in mind for how to identify the incidents that you would like to stop notifications for, you can create filters on the email notifications for incident related events.

Yes, I was going to add a check box field for toggling on/off the email notifications for specific incidents but then I noticed the 'Notify' field and wondered if it was already part of the system. Trying out the notify field with the different choices it already has has no effect though.
