Troubleshoot missing roles

New developer here, in the NextGen program.  I'm dealing with a brand new instance, and have imported new users, as well as created several custom applications and installed several plugins.  As of right now, none of my users have any roles assigned. 

 

How can it be determined from within the platform if a function isn't working properly due to a missing role?  I could simply assign roles liberally, but that feels like a security problem.  Is there a way to troubleshoot or otherwise indicate within the platform something to the effect of "ServiceNow tried to do X, but user is missing role Y, so it didn't work".
