Unable to insert custom-class instance into CMDB

I have created a child class under cmdb_ci (called u_cmdb_ci_vmware_virtualization_environment). Along with that, I created an identifier to use the company and name fields. After verifying that the payload contains the company and name values, I sent it to https://<instance>/api/now/identifyreconcile/enhanced and got back:

  • Non-CMDB CI class is not allowed as top level item. Non-CMDB CI class: [u_cmdb_ci_vmware_virtualization_environment]

According to https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/washingtondc-servicenow-platform/page/product/configuration-manag... indicates, this should work. What am I missing?
