Update list field choice values without impacting the existing records

Hi,

Due to some existing platform issue(PRB1560944), as a workaround we are planning to update the choice values from integers to string., but the problem here is the existing  choice on the list field update to the backend choice value. If any one come had faced this issue earlier, kindly let me know the workaround, on how to update the sys_choice values for a list field, without updating the choice labels in the existing records.

Added attachmentsfor the same. In image4, I need to restrict updating the choice value in the list field.. Is there any workaround for the same.

What happens if you make the existing choices inactive, and just add the new choices?

Thanks for your reply. I have tried the above, but the existing labels are updated to choice values after updating to inactive. It again requires some workaround/ manual work to remove the inactive choices from the list type field.,
