Variable set layout question

Is it possible to have a single variable set that goes from 2 columns to 1 column and back to 2 columns?

Similar to this:

I've tried it a number of ways using containers, but they just don't seem to want to play ball?

Or do I just have to have 3 seperate variable sets to achieve this sort of layout?

Can anyone assist please?

Portal/Employee Center handles this different than the backend, so you will need 3 variable sets.  No containers or splits needed, but the first and third need to have a 2 column layout

I was able to achieve this within one variable set:

Here's the magic:

Thanks for the reply @Brad Bowman  , can I ask how you created the variable set?

I can't get the same result as you.

I have set the variable set as type: single row and have to choose a layout, doesn't matter what I choose it doesn't display correctly.

I just chose single row and created the variable types and order as shown.  What does your layout look like when you do this?

So here is what I have and how it looks in both the backend and the portal - ultimately I'm wanting it to look right in the portal/employee center.

This is what it looks like in the backend:

This is the portal view:

And I got the layout around the wrong way, but essentially still the same as what you've done:
