What exactly does the approver_user role grant you?

Other than granting you access to the My Approvals Module, what specifically does this role do, other than cost you money? I don't see any ACLs or anything that specifically require this role. Furthermore, if someone is an approver, and that's the only role they have, why can't they have a read only view of the record they are approving? It seems like this role wasn't fully thought out, what am I missing?
And please don't respond with a cut and paste of the vague base role description. I'm looking for a more detailed response from people in the know.
Thanks

Yeah, history is important here, specifically the history of how ServiceNow charges. Long ago, they charged by the itil role. Then, as they grew, they restructured fees based on fulfillers, and approving became a fulfiller activity.

Hi,
For users without an ITIL role that will need to do approvals in your environment then you may have a need for approver_user. In turn license.
However, when approvals can be done through ESS/Service Portal or Email this role will not be required.
Thanks,
Jaspal Singh

Hi ,
Just to udnerstand , why do we need to provide 'approver_user' role to any person/end user when they can already approve from the portal/email. Do we have any other usage with respect to approval?

If you can do all of that through email...and track it appropriately...WITHOUT the role..(which in turn allows usage of the full approval system for ITSM) then...don't issue the role. I have 2 situations at my company where we just need someone to review something via email...and respond with reject or approve and that's it and their involvement is only for like one catalog item.
Others...are involved in a LOT and so to make things easier for them and myself...they use one of the approver roles because they are in SN a lot and you can take advantage of some of the OOB features...
It varies per company/person, but yes....my company only bought or needed like 5 approver licenses...other than that...it's email or ITIL for others...
