What is the best way to create a order guide or catalog item for compatible hardware?

Hello,

I'm trying to help develop a better way for my company to present which items are compatible to users hardware when making the request from an order guide or catalog item. 

I have two use cases for this.

1.) the user is requesting toner or parts for a specific printer.
2.) the user is requesting compatible hardware consumables for their computers. 

I know in Product Model entries I can specify the compatible Hardware.

It seems that there would be a way to make a connection to list of Compatible hardware via an order guide or catalog item and present only those compatible items to the user.

The users know the identity of the item they have and can select that in the order guide.  (e.g. they have the Serial number of the device.)
