What is the difference between story and demand?

Hi @BoHyun Jung

A demand is a business requirement which may have been created by a specific product owner/manager in which he states the requirement and all the estimates like financials will be there. Once the demand is reviewed and approved it might be converted to a Project or a Change Request (if the requirement is smaller).

Sometimes Ideas submitted by the end users will be reviewed by the respective manager or PO and will be converted to Demands.

Where as Storys are workable pieces of the requirement by a Developer within a stipulated time (may be a sprint most of the times). The stories are created from the demand, which was later converted to a Project/Change Request.

The description is purely based on my personal experience.

In technical terms and from ServiceNow perspective,

Demand is a way that centralizes strategic requests from the business to IT and automates the steps in the investment decision process.

Where as story is the smallest unit of work in an agile framework. It's an end goal, not a feature, expressed from the software user's perspective.

Hi @BoHyun Jung ,

In ServiceNow, "Story" and "Demand" are commonly used terms in the context of IT Service Management (ITSM) and Agile development. Here's a brief overview of each:

1. **Story:**
- In an Agile framework, such as Scrum, a "Story" typically refers to a user story. It is a concise, user-focused description of a feature or functionality from an end-user perspective.
- Agile teams use stories to capture and prioritize functionality in a way that aligns with the user's needs. Stories are often written in a format like "As a [user type], I want [an action] so that [benefit/value]."
- Stories are associated with Agile development methodologies and are commonly used in Agile project management tools like Jira. In ServiceNow, stories can be part of the Agile Development application.

2. **Demand:**
- In ServiceNow's IT Business Management (ITBM) suite, "Demand" is a broader term that encompasses a request or need for work to be done. A demand could be a project, enhancement, service request, or any other type of work that requires resources.
- Demands can be used to initiate and track various types of work across the organization. They serve as a way to capture and manage demand for IT services and projects.
- Demands are not specific to Agile methodologies and are used in a wider IT service and project management context.

In summary, a "Story" is a specific type of work item commonly associated with Agile development, focusing on user-centric features. On the other hand, a "Demand" is a more general term in ServiceNow, encompassing various types of work requests and projects within the broader scope of IT service and project management. The terminology and usage may vary depending on the specific modules and applications within the ServiceNow platform.

Thanks,

Danish
