Workplace vending machines

Our CIO is talking about bringing in "vending machines" that will handle dispensing smaller, not so fragile items things like mice, dongles, etc.  One of the ideas is for the user to do a request through the catalog in our service portal.  That would give the user a code or an authorization to take to a vending machine.  When arriving at the vending machine, the user would punch in the code or swipe their ID (we're not yet doing retinal scanning) and the requested item would be dispensed.

The question is, has anyone seen and/or implemented something like this with ServiceNow?  If so, can you please give me an idea of some of the big challenges and obstacles?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

We have not implemented it but i had the same thought about standard items could be requested and accessed without approval (mouse, dongle etc) and perhaps more expensive items contain an approval workflow (chargers, HDMI Cables, etc) that goes to their manager in an attempt to minimize users exploiting the system. all at the end of the day generating a code/ticket number/swipe access card to eventually collect the item themselves.

even further to that, setting min max levels in the cmdb of mice/dongles etc and generate auto replenishment requests.

Would love to see if anyone has implemented something similar and hear form the community. Going to follow along.

Hi Sean,

After I posted this, I came to find out that ServiceNow is prototyping such a machine.  I have feelers out find out more.

As I understand it, they have it set up that anyone can come and get basic items (mouse, dongle, mouse pad, etc.) by coming up to the machine and swiping their ID.  That will create the request and process it through to record everything and update the various inventories.

They also have the approval processes for the more controlled items so that once approved, the item is made available in the machine.  They also have a part of the machine where people can drop off or pick up computers either for new/replacement or repair.

As I get more information I'll add updates.  One of the other questions I have is what machine are they using and what does it cost to purchase, set up and maintain.

Hi John, Sean - have you progressed with implementation of the vending machines? I am mostly interested in how it would be captured in CMDB - what class?

Regards,

Wawrzek

The introduction of such vending machines is quite an interesting idea. Investing in vending machines is a good passive income option for a business. Plus, they not only provide convenience but also help to increase productivity in the workplace. Find out how to buy a vending machine to help you make an informed decision. And here's where you can leave your application for the installation of such a machine.
