My library Knowledge Sources To Go is very popular, but it was intended mainly as a thematically grouped guide to standard sources and was provided by me as a PDF file. For certain topics, however, there is so much content that I can no longer include it in that document, as it cannot continue to grow forever.

For this reason, I have decided to handle such topics in individual community articles like this one instead.

Hi Maik,

Thanks for taking the time putting this useful blog. We are beginning to construct a model for Hardware Assets and would like to set the proper foundation. Currently we have a model 'Computer' which I found includes laptops and desktops.

Question: Is this Ok to simply use Computer or should we create new models to break apart Computer for more granularity?

Example:

Laptop

Desktop

Thanks

"Computer" (cmdb_ci_computer) as a Configuration Item table (read: Class) will hold the discovered hardware devices that are categorized within the Computer category (Laptops, Desktops, Notebooks, Tablets—especially ones running MS Office).

Even servers are children of the parent computer class because a server is a computer with more attributes that you wish to include beyond the computer class base table form.

Naturally, if we don't categorize, or categorize too much, we end up with one big class or too many dispersed classes of data that we have to re-merge for analytics and reporting.

Over the many years I have implemented and advised clients on CMDB and Asset Management I always first ask what the organization will do with the data and how they view the devices before I recommend a method for schema model and categorization of models.

On a basic level, define End-user devices as computers, Networked servers as Servers (cmdb_ci_server) with flavors for O/S (ie: cmdb_ci_win_server), and so on for Network Gear, Communication Hardware,...

Remember to go to Guided Setup to set Thresholds for your HW classes, opt-in for NDS and Content updates, and run your Normalization jobs (in that order) so you start with a good Normalized Discovery and synched asset/ci AMDB within your instance.

Hope this helps.
