Is it worth to set up the APM application without CMDB?

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well!

I have a question and would appreciate your assistance. I'm contemplating whether it's worthwhile to configure the APM application without the CMDB.

Currently, we are facing challenges in tracking and managing our applications, which are currently listed in a spreadsheet. We are seriously considering implementing the APM module in ServiceNow to address this issue. However, our CMDB is not configured yet, which is the reason for reaching out here today. Can you lend me a hand?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lucas,

yes,

Launching your APM initiative gives you the immediate benefit of top-down visibility into your IT portfolio. This enables you to:

  • Establish a clear onboarding process for new applications that ensures they align with your overall IT strategy and business goals.
  • Define a streamlined application retirement process that allows you to identify and remove underutilized or obsolete applications, resulting in a leaner and more efficient IT environment.
  • Rationalize your business portfolio by strategically aligning applications with business objectives, prioritizing investments, and identifying potential redundancies.

Hey Doron, thanks for your reply!

That's great! And would it be necessary to use Discovery (CSDM) or any other ITOM modules and applications in order to achieve the immediate benefit of top-down visibility you mentioned?

Discovery and Service Mapping can be added at any stage to provide more data on the alignment of technology to the applications and services, however building the application portfolio, establishing the processes, building the business capability map, and aligning it to the business applications, evaluating maturity and need and so on - all of these can start without discovery and service mapping.

Today we only have the ITSM, CSM and FSM modules in our environments.
