Basic IT Asset management

I have been exploring and reaching out to understand the distinctions between ITSM Asset Management (Hardware & Software), ITAM, and HAM/SAM, but have not been able to clearly identify the differences.

I would appreciate urgent support in clarifying the following:

  • What are the differences in features and functionalities across ITSM Asset Management, ITAM, and HAM/SAM?
  • What capabilities are included within each of these modules/sub modules?
  • Which tables are activated or utilized within ServiceNow for each?
  • What are the typical use cases or scenarios where each can be applicable

Hi @Ruchi18

1. ITAM (IT Asset Management)
  • What it is: The overarching discipline of tracking and managing all physical and digital IT assets from procurement to retirement.
  • Focus: Financial value, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), contracts, depreciation, and audit readiness.
  • In ServiceNow: ITAM is the parent umbrella that includes both hardware and software disciplines.

2. HAM (Hardware Asset Management)

  • What it is: A specialized, premium add-on application in ServiceNow designed to automate the physical asset lifecycle.
  • Focus: Model normalization, automated stockroom transfers, hardware reclamation, contract renewals, and disposal tracking.
  • In ServiceNow: It provides a dedicated workspace and intelligent workflows to streamline hardware management

3. SAM (Software Asset Management)

  • What it is: A specialized, premium add-on application that focuses purely on digital and software assets.
  • Focus: License compliance, software reclamation (uninstalling unused apps), tracking SaaS subscriptions, and optimizing ongoing software costs.
  •  It links directly with HAM to understand hardware limits, ensuring your software installations match what you are legally permitted to use.

Thank you I am now more clear on the HAM & SAM part but I am not still clear on ITSM-Asset management and ITAM .

Am I correct to understand that the Core Asset management functionality /features/tables etc. which comes with ITSM and ITAM  are same?

Hi @Ruchi18,

For HAM there is the following graphic, that explains very well when you reach the tipping point and should switch from Asset Management to Hardware Asset Management Professional or Advanced with the AI-led SKUs.

For SAM unfortunately such a graphic doesn't exist, but if you want to normalize and reconcile your installations or SaaS applications, create license balances, meter usages and optimize your spend, you have to switch to the paid version.

Hope this helps!
