Hardware Catalog - Publish a model

Hi All,

We want to offer a few hardware assets as Service Catalog items for end users. Out of the box, is publishing individual hardware models to the catalog the only option?

If there are hundreds of hardware models, what is the recommended approach for managing them? Is there a way to publish a generic Desktop and Laptop catalog item instead of creating separate catalog items for each model?

Thanks!

Hi @pramodkumar,

Yes, the out of the box you can only publish one catalog item per hardware model, there's no built-in way to create one generic "Laptop" item that covers all models automatically. The reason is that when someone places an order, the system needs to know the exact model so it can give them one from stock, a generic item doesn't provide that info.

With hundreds of models, here's what I'd suggest:

  • Don't publish every model individually, group them into a few simple items instead, like "Standard Laptop", "Advanced Laptop", and "Standard Desktop"
  • When someone orders one of these, it creates a task for your IT team, and they pick the actual model in stock and assign it to the user
  • If different teams need different options, use an Order Guide to send each group to the right item automatically
  • Avoid trying to link many models to one catalog item to auto pick the right one, it doesn't work reliably at scale

I hope this is helpful👍.

Hello @pramodkumar ,

As far as I know many organizations implement a service offering (e.g Request a Laptop) rather than exposing every available hardware model directly. The fulfillment team or automation then selects the most appropriate model based on the user's requirements and organizational standards.

If my response helped mark as helpful and accept the solution.
