Hello,
Would you happen to have a comparison of BMC's Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping v.s. ServiceNow's Discovery tool? I am looking for information from a functional, technical and capability perspective.
If you have used both tools, you may have some interesting insights.
Any help or tips would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Cheers,
Isaac

Hi Isaac,
BMC — ADDM is a traditional discovery tool with similar capabilities to ServiceNow Discovery. Both tools are designed to discover the entire infrastructure in an environment, and populate the CMDB with Configuration Items (CI) that represent the infrastructure and relationships between the different parts of the infrastructure. These relationships do not correspond to business services as each CI may have a multitude of relationships with other CI's that are not related to a service. The only way to build service models using this tool is to build them manually.
What sets our approach apart from BMC is ServiceWatch. ServiceWatch uses a different and unique approach to business service modeling which leverages a patented technology that uses the entry point (the "ui" or interface where the service is accessed) as the definition of a service. Once an entry point is defined, ServiceWatch will use the application flow from the entry point to discover and map all components of the business service that support this entry point. This reduces the need for deep knowledge of the service, reducing the time to map a typical business service from days, down to a few hours. This approach also allows for easy maintenance of service models, as ServiceWatch uses the entry point to rediscover the service by following the application flow from the entry point, and automatically discovering the new service model if it changes.
We just published a white paper that dives into this topic, you can find it here.
Feel free to reach out if you have further questions.
