Can you restrict showing a module link by group instead of role?

Hi,
Out-of-box, there is no such configuration available. But, you can create similar configuration. To achieve the same, you need to do below configuration:
!) Create new field called Group list on module table
2) Write before query business rule on module table to check whether logged-in user is part of Group mention in group list or not and accordingly display.

easiest for me has been to create a role.. and give it to the group.. then use it.

I also think that creating a role would be the best solution, but I've been hearing that even customized roles granted to certain users just for reading purposes imply the use of a license. Do you know if that's true.
