CMDB - Owned by and Managed by - definitions?

Hello,

We would like some feedback as to how other organizations use the Owned by and Managed by fields in the CMDB.  I found a couple articles in the Community, but we would like to see how others have defined this.

Is anyone defining Owned by to be the Business Process Owner?  If so, who is the Managed by?

Thank you for your input.  All responses will be marked helpful 🙂

Hi,

One more point i forgot to add is the Health Dashboard. We have them based on groups.
So if any metric fails for the CI then we create task for that managed by group to update the CI or check the CI attribute.

Thanks,

Hi,

My take on this. It is primarily a constitution of operations and governance. These fields should be wisely and strategically used according to IT landscape.

We used the Owned By, Assigned and Support group fields for CMDB. The Owner by referred to the Owner of the CI or asset. That goes to whether the asset is owned by internal IT teams or external agencies, which then runs into the EOL support whether is AMC managed by internal IT or the asset or CI is simply taken care of by agency at EOL. This also takes care of any extended warranty to be applied, paid for etc. taken care by the owned by.

Support group is operational aspect, who supports the CI in case of incidents or changes. An auto routing mechanism can be setup if the support group data is complete. Ticket created against CI can be auto routed to the support groups.

Assigned is device assigned to either an end user who consumes the device services or a network device which is taken care of by a H&F team etc.

This has resolved the ownership of CI , the physical support of CI (assets) and operational support through tickets.

Hope this helps!
