I'm new with Discovery and we are currently we made up and running the Discovery to Development.

My problem is we don't want all Classes to be discovered and like to filter out which classes needs only to be discovered.

Can you help me how ? Let's say below are the items I would like to eliminate classes like:

a. Disk

b. File System

c. Memory Module

d. Print Queue

e. UPS Output

f. Exit Interface Routing Route etc.,

TIA!

There are two ways you can do this if you are looking to filter that information:

1) Go into the device classification   for the type of CI you are scanning (server, printer ,router, et al) and remove those probes. Most of those probes should be a 1:1 match for the related lists, but some related lists are populated by a multiprobe. You will have to "scan and check" to make sure. This will prevent that information from being populated at all.

2) Alternatively you can simply remove those related lists from the forms themselves and modifying modules and reports where necessary. It's a bit more work initially but allows you to keep all CI information full and up-to-date.

I don't typically recommend removing probes because it can have affects on managing your CMDB outside of eliminating certain types of CIs (ie not utilizing the "running processes" probe prevents discovery from creating and updating CI relationships).

Hi Prdelong,

I have also same requirement as Mel. We need to exclude some classes being discovered and I am also new to discovery. I have seen your solution and could you please help me how to remove the probes from scanning step by step if possible. I have tried my best to do it but unable to achieve it. It would be great if you explain with example and step by step approach.

Many thanks in advance!

Thanks and regards,

I'll go through this quickly. It's going to be based off a Eureka instance, but it should be identical for any supported version.

1) Navigate to the CI Classification section of the Nav Menu

2) Choose the type of Classification you want to modify (ie Windows if you want to remove the Windows - Installed Software probe)

3) Choose the relevant classifier(s) (ie Windows Server 2003)

4) Click on the 'triggers probes' tab and hit edit

5) Hit 'edit' and remove/add the probes as you will

Thanks a lot Prdelong. It helped me a lot.

Thanks and regards,

Sunil Safare.

Hi Prdelong,

Do you have any idea about discovery filters which we need to put in place as I notice from an overall of 10 servers in our environment, I see that by default approximately 400 CIs are getting created in my instance. Please let me know the quick steps in case if you have any idea. Thanks in advance!!

Also in Geneva and later, they introduced something called the Configuration Console. Just search for that in the left navigator. This is a nice simple GUI to turn on and off discovery of certain types of CI's. It is not extremely flexible so doing what Kumar suggests gives you the most granular configuration, but it is easy to use.
