Discovery - prerequisites before implementing

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone had some advice/information on prerequisites on your data before looking to implement discovery.  This would also include discovery in AWS.

We have some information in the CMDB some manually created and some from API sources, how do you manage the current data compared with Discovery.

Is there some advice on a data cleanup exercise or anything similar before implementing?

Thanks

Sam

Hi,

Post discovery - you can differentiate the data by the discovery source field. check out the current discovery source for the data you have now, it should state it was entered manually(don't remember the exact name).

as for discovery prerequisites:

that depends on what you are looking to discover. each device and application has its own requirements. specifically for AWS, you configure a service account and a set of AWS credentials that accompany it. i advise you search for documentation for specific devices or services you are looking to discover in the official documentation. also - if something is missing and you'd like to see it in the product, your feedback is appreciated on this issue and my team(pattern content team) takes this into consideration and honestly even heavily depends on it.

thank you,

Daniel from the pattern team.

Hi Sam,

Before executing discovery, you can consider the below.

1) Mid server threads max. Default is 25 and you can increase till 70 based on your mid server hardware config.

2) Ensure that all CIs are in same domain or respective domain if it is a domain separated instance.

3) Ensure the CI Names loaded in the CMDB are same at device level. Please check the OOB identifier rules. Any discrepancy here may not identify the CI and will result in new CI creation which will be a duplicate.

4) You can add behaviors. for e.g. SNMP only for N/W devices.

5) You can check the CMDB dashboards (especially Correctness dashboard). This will show the duplicate CIs if there are any already in your database.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Anusha
