Discovery Probes to Patterns

Hi everyone.

We have an upgraded instance which is now running Kingston.  And there are lots of Windows and Linux server CIs already in the CMDB discovered using probes.  Now we want to begin moving from probes to patterns as patterns are the future.

As I read through "Windows discovery" in Kingston documentation, I see this:

Caution: Manually switching from probes/sensors to patterns is not recommended for the operating system patterns, such as Windows and Linux.

And I don't see reasons this is not recommended or suggestions on how to migrate from probes to patterns.

Ron,

The main challenge is our new and improved Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE). Talking with the 'powers that be' there might be the opportunity for duplicates to be created since the previous identification process and new process look for different aspects of Configuration items (servers) and may not sync on the same values.  So in the meantime stick with the probes and sensors for existing discovery deployments till we hear through the release notes that the appropriate merging accommodations have taken place.

Manual switching from probes to patterns are going to result in duplicates. I saw network adapter records getting duplicated after switching.

Opened case and ServiceNow says -

Unfortunately, our development team says there is no procedure to switch from probes to patterns. It should not be done.
In your case, you already made the switch and are using patterns. So you can continue to use patterns if you want, but whether you want to use patterns or probes now, you will have to clean up your CMDB wiht duplicates that were created.
IMPORTANT: What you clean up will depend on which route you go. If you go back to probes you will need to delete the NEWLY created CIs. If you want to keep patterns and you should remove the OLDER discovered CIs.

Then they created enhancement request to have identified way of switching from probes to patterns in future releases.
