How did you set up automated lifecycle mapping in CMDB?

Hey All,

I've looked through so many community posts, youtube videos etc. I understand the legacy operational/install status and the new CSDM life cycle stage and status. I understand that you can use CMDB Data Manager for automating archiving, retiring and deleting of CIs.

The one major part I don't understand is how you set up the transitions from one stage/status to another with whatever information you get from discovery? We don't really have status information passed down from our discovery sources outside of active/inactive. Without creating a big network of scripts and manual processes I don't understand how I can transition from for example: Inventory - Available to Operational - In Use or from Operational - In Use to Missing - Lost or any of the other combinations.

I imagine I'm missing some crucial part of the engine from ServiceNow side as it seems like lifecycle stages and statuses were defined but there's no infrastructure to really run them or transition between them (without a lot of manual work).

If you can suggest any resources, help or provide some personal experiences with implementing this yourself I'd be very grateful!
