@yanhuiw ,
1. Scanning (Shazzam Phase)
In this initial phase, the Shazzam probe scans defined IP ranges to detect active devices and identify open ports.
Purpose: To determine which devices are active and what communication protocols (e.g., SSH, WMI, SNMP) are available.
Result: A list of open ports, which is sent back to the instance to determine the next steps.
2. Classification
Based on the open ports identified in the scanning phase, ServiceNow determines the specific type of device (e.g., Linux server, Windows machine, network router).
Purpose: To identify the operating system or device type and trigger the appropriate classification probes or patterns.
Result: The device is classified, and the system determines which table in the CMDB the device belongs to.
3. Identification
During this phase, Discovery collects detailed information (such as serial number, hostname, and MAC address) to determine if the device already exists in the CMDB.
Purpose: To prevent duplicates and ensure data accuracy by matching the device against existing CIs.
Result: The Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) updates existing CIs or creates a new CI record if it is not found.
4. Exploration
In the final phase, Discovery digs deeper into the classified device to gather in-depth information.
Purpose: To identify installed software, running processes, and relationships between applications and devices.
Result: The CMDB is updated with detailed attributes, including installed software, memory, network cards, and running processes.
