In many interviews I get a common question :
How you decide the number of mid servers required to discover client network / data center ?
I am not sure how to calculate number of mid servers required for a particular data center.
Please guide on the same.

Hi @Jenish2,
Interesting question and one of those that really depends on a number of factors.
@Callan Bond has thankfully provided us with some practical advice and guidance in this aread - Kudos.
Take a look at the link below. Here's a quick preview with relevant info:
- The number of MID Servers required for “standard” deployments depends on the number of targets to interact with and frequency of interaction.
- Products like Discovery and Service mapping are considered "standard" because their MID Servers share the same disk space and memory requirements
- Cloud Provisioning and Governance, Event Management, and ACC require more resources than standard. Refer to docs for more details.
- Multiple MID Servers should be separately hosted within each network segment so they do not need to go over a firewall to access target machines.

Thanks @Robbie and @Callan Bond for very useful information.
Hi @Jenish2
Yes .... the number of mid servers depends on the "standard" and the number of devices being discovered.
Once your discovery is in place for a data center, you can decide to maintain separate mid servers for devices like SNMP etc based on number of devices you are discovering.
If would also be good to install mid-ser for Dev and Prod on the same host so that the results are re-producible. Also, you will have an idea about all the firewall requirements for both.
Please go through below link to get more info about bandwidth for different types of devices so that you can manage resources properly :
ServiceNow Docs for Discovery Bandwidth Graph and resource utilization
MID Server system requirements

Hi @Jenish2 ,
just look for "MID server Discovery Estimator", it is excel file with the information you are looking for. 😉
