How to do Manual Service Mapping? Is it even possible?

Hi All,

Service Mapping works well with Top-Down Discovery (if the discovery tool is in place to use) to automate the mapping.

But,

  1. How to do the Service Mapping Manually if no discovery tool?
  2. What are the step-by-step procedures to complete Manual service mapping?
  3. What are required before starting to map?
  4. Are they going to be any challenges?

Please help me to setup this which would help in great understanding of the procedure.

Right on Point. Master stroke Dave.

Dave,

I totally agree with you and I have worked well with CMDB and discovery and know the issues that comes without this heart. This is where I am facing the issue to let the Change team know that without proper CMDB and some automation setup, it will be difficult to setup the service mapping for the Scope and not a good approach to follow. But they keep saying we need this to complete for the applications as critical.

Even we haven't done anything like this in previous organizations but here is different and they are expecting to setup this for a short period (like for next 2 months). And it was already said by the build team that CMDB is in process to be setup and won't be ready at least by next 2 to 3 weeks.

As I never faced such situations it is becoming difficult to make them agree to the fact.

Could you pls let me know what can I suggest in a better way?

Hi, Imagine the recover you need to do after few months. To clean up cmdb is very problematic and overhead afterwards. Not only cmdb but then your ITSM process is also an issue. You need to focus on risk which will occur in future. Becoz you need to maintain this manual service and each and every time you need maintain it and keep it up to date buy rebuilding relationship. So be careful before you take any decision and approach. Thanks, Ashutosh
