Non discoverable CIs

Hi,

We have few types of storage and backup appliances which does not support discovery.

Is there any OOB field to mark a CI as non-discoverable?

What are the strategies you follow to maintain non-discoverable CIs in CMDB?

Regards,

Chandra

I know these CIs cannot be discovered as service accounts cannot be setup on these machines. I was trying to explore if there is any out of the box field which i can use, so that i can filter these CIs out in reports i present to managers.

There is an OOTB field called discovery source on the Computer table that should work for you. You can set that and then filter out when need be.

I created a discovery status field with a business rule that populates it.

Default value is Unknown on creation.  If the thing gets discovered its set to Discoverable. Teams managing data in CMDB are expected to set the value to Non-discoverable (we report continually on things not getting discovered in the past X number of days).  If its marked Non--discoverable and it gets updated by discovery the value is changed to Discoverable.

EDIT: To add to that, discovery source answers a specific question: what is the source of the data.  This value being empty doesn't tell you if the CI is capable of being discovered, it really only tells you that it hasn't been discovered (which you can already see from first_discovered and last_discovered).

You can use OOB column "source" to identify between discoverer and non discovered CI.

You can populate source as discovery for discovery CIs.
