Using Madrid patch 4 and just setup discovery. I have run a discovery on a range of servers and found that for SQL instances (MSFT SQL Instances) the version name is not always populated.
For example, two SQL 2012 servers were discovered using the same credential which has public role permissions to both servers. However only 1 of the 2 CI records will show the version name as 2012.
I have attached a copy of the discovery pattern of the 2 servers and you can clearly see that on the good one it found the version name but on the other it did not.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Are you using probes or patterns? Is SMO installed?

SMO is installed and I am using patterns. What I cannot understand is why one Discovery will populate the version name of one SQL 2014 but not another. They are both using the same credential and running the same pattern.

Does the one instance with the version populated also have the databases running on that instance populated? If so it is because your OS credentials have access to the database instance on one and not the other. This reduces the need for applicative credentials for MS-SQL.
