Hi Experts,

 

Could someone help me to know what is the advantage of storage discovery . What benefit does storage team can leverage by putting the storage components and the relationship in CMDB?

 By leveraging storage discovery and populating this data into the Configuration Management Database (CMDB), the storage team can benefit in the following ways:

  1. Storage discovery ensures that the CMDB contains an up-to-date and accurate inventory of all storage devices present in the organization's network. This information helps the storage team to have a comprehensive view of their assets.

  2. By establishing relationships between storage components and other IT assets (such as servers, applications, and network devices), the storage team can gain insights into how different components interact with one another. This knowledge aids in understanding the impact of storage changes on other parts of the IT infrastructure.

  3.  Having storage components and their relationships documented in the CMDB allows the storage team to perform configuration and dependency analysis. This analysis helps identify potential issues, track dependencies, and ensure proper alignment with business requirements.

  4.  The CMDB's enriched data from storage discovery enables better incident and problem management. When issues arise, the storage team can quickly identify affected assets and their dependencies, leading to faster resolution and reduced downtime.

Discovery  gathers information about storage units that connect to Linux, Solaris, and Windows hosts via a local I/O port or Host Bus Adapter (HBA)

 

We  faced Storage servers in Service Mapping

We considered all Storage devices are having  Discovery limitation and we managed those devices manually in Service Map .

We Noticed in our  Mapping that some Non-operational storage servers listed are discovered and non -operational

and we don't know the reason.

Consumer of Storage CI discovered data are at different layers like Operational , Functional, Strategic etc.

 

Ops team will be more informed when you have updated Storage CI data into CMDB, INC /CR on which Storage CIs, Trends analysis on basis of CIs etc.

When Discovery is properly done and Maps/Relationships are created - Impact analysis is very easy , You can gaze the impact from Core Storage layer to Application layer etc.

 

Strategically Capacity Planning, Forecasting, Budgeting  etc is done using Updated Storage CI data .

 

This all happens when u have updated CMDB.
