What are "Pattern Designer Enhancements" / Command Validation Tool and why should we care?

So, I read the description in the ServiceNow Store and this page
Validate commands used in discovery (servicenow.com)

and the KB

but still now sure I understand what I would use this for.

Can someone explain?

Thanks!

Hi @David77

Mainly to understand Pattern commands validation and Troubleshooting Purpose we will use Command validation tool

If your pattern-based discovery fails and certain commands don't return the correct response due to authentication issues ,you can use the tool to execute the same command on the same IP via the desired MID server.

Hi @David77

The doc and KB states the problem being solved along with the use cases, what else did you find difficult to understand here, can you be more specific on what you didn't get.

Hi @PankajT68703921

We don't have any dashboard/reports created out of this, but that's good feedback we can think of.

However this is an admin used tool where the command validation result records will have the clear info of the error and how to resolve that as well.

Hi David,

The tool can be used for following:

1. If your pattern based discovery fails and if some commands did not bring back the proper response (maybe because of authentication issue, authorisation issue, reachability of ip from mid), you can use the tool to run the same command on the same ip via the desired mid to see what is the actual response and what is reason of error.

2. You can onboard new infra or IPs. Suppose you want to discover a subnet full of linux machines, then you can specify the subnet in the tool, choose automatic command validation option and choose the linux server pattern, then the tool will run all the commands, which linux patter is supposed to run, and you will be able to figure out, if you have any issues with the configured credentials (authentication, authorisation, reachability from mid) before you perform actual ServiceNow Pattern based discovery.
