Cell Phones and Sim Cards

Hi all,

We want to start tracking our use of mobile devices - blackberries, ipads etc and their relationship linking to its sim cards.

How do people deal with this? Do you use accessories or communication devices or something else? how then do you link it to sim card - do you build a cmdb type wit sims as a separate table and link, or more as a field on form?

Doe anyone else show a lifecycle of a phone e.g. purchase to assigning to disposals or recycling while also capturing warranty info.

Any general guidelines, or past experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks!

However I don't believe I've seen this using SIM cards as a field value. The same goes for similar things like IMEI or ESN. From a CMDB standpoint, you're really going to be more concerned with the piece of hardware over a removable chip, and not all providers and phones have a removable SIM card. Just create a custom field for whatever values you're looking for (maybe add some formatting or normalization rules).

Ruth,

We actually are getting ready to use a servicenow partner addon called Mobichord to assist us with managing the mobile devices.

They actually split the simcard out into a separate table which a phone has a reference to and this helps for a few reasons. Sim cards break or change due to feature shifts or service changes and your field service team may have an inventory of them available that could be tracked as a consumable for reorder. As a component which is removable you can track the lifecycle and associated details as relevant to your organization independently of the phone itself.
